Helium for Mailart It was a lazy Saturday when my friend Susanne handed a small notice to me. It was an article from Berliner Zeitung saying that collectors and artists would display their works in Gropiussatdt on Sunday. It mentioned that a Daniel Hampel would be there to display his newest self constructed airship. Daniel Hampel is the only private airship builder in Germany. He constructs and builds airships which qualify as experimental flying tools, as their length extends 3.80m. When he lost his very first airship, he became very well known to the locals, as Bildzeitung, a daily boulevard newspaper, reported the loss. So when I read about him, it immediately became clear that I had to take a chance and continue with my mailart concept of flown mail. On Sunday I drove to Gropiussadt and looked for Daniel. I found a very open minded young man, enthusiastic about blimps and airships. After a short chat I explained why I had come from Wedding to Neukölln, and handed him two mailart covers, to give him a better understanding what I was up to. He agreed at once to stage a mailart flight and was really excited by the new purpose his airship would have. So, I went home and called for participants through a mailart mailing list. |
